Yes, you can shorten the sleeves or legs of your wetsuit, but there are important factors to consider before making any modifications. Once a wetsuit has been altered, it voids the warranty and cannot be returned. Therefore, it is crucial to first ensure that the overall fit is correct before proceeding with any adjustments.
Inside the arms and legs of your wetsuit, you’ll find approximately 7 cm of seam tape. This reinforcement allows you to trim the length if necessary. However, any cuts beyond this seam tape will require additional reinforcement to prevent fraying and maintain durability. In a pinch you can do this on race-day, just make sure you reinforce later.
Many athletes prefer customizing their wetsuits for ease of use. For example, some opt for a mid-calf cut (a “capri-style” modification) to facilitate quicker transitions during races. In fact, many triathletes who don’t “need” the extra 4-6 inches below the knee cut their wetsuit legs to make it easier to put their wetsuit on and also take off during transition.
In fact, one of Xterra Wetsuits’ highest-end wetsuits, the Vengeance, already is designed as capri-cut: https://www.xterrawetsuits.com/collections/mens-fullsuits/products/vengeance-fullsuit-triathlon-wetsuit . So, basically any other model can be made capri-cut / mid-calf.
If you decide to trim beyond the built-in seam tape, we recommend reinforcing the cut edges with seam tape—such as McNett or Gear Aid Black Tenacious Tape, available on Amazon.
